July Storm Pelts Denver Metro Area
June brought severe thunderstorm warnings, delayed flights, and multiple flooded streets to the streets of Denver. But what the June storms lacked was hail. Reportedly, hail balls were only the diameter of a quarter.
July, however, is shaping up to be a different story. Just yesterday, (July 15th), a monster storm dropped hail as large as 2 inches in diameter. Many cars were severely dented, and numerous residents reported shattered windshields, in the Greenwood Village area. Many even found hail inside their cars.
Later into the evening, reports of hail damage in the Dayton area continued to come in, some describing damage not just to cars, but homes as well.
While it?s too early to know the full amount of the damage, for many Colorado homeowners, replacing windshields, siding, and roofs seems to becoming more common than not. In the years 2013-2015, Colorado ranked second nationally, only to Texas, in total hail claims. As the damaging hail season is considered to be from mid-April to mid-August, if storms like the one yesterday continue, Colorado may just outrank Texas.
And with $3 billion dollars of damage from hail in the last ten years in Colorado alone, it?s estimated that up to one half of Colorado homeowner?s insurance policies go toward covering hail damage.
For residents of Greenwood Village, that?s a good thing, as for many, their first call will be to their insurance company to report a claim for hail damage.
